New Coaches

The Laredo Independent School District recently announced the promotion and naming of new coaches for the Boy’s Baseball Team at Martin High School, Girls’ Track at Martin High School, and Boys’ Soccer at Cigarroa High School. Alejandro Garza has been promoted to head baseball coach at Martin High School. Jorge Romo has been hired as the new girls’ track coach at Martin High School, while Cesar Rivera was named the new boys’ soccer coach at Cigarroa High School.   

“We are blessed to welcome three coaches into their new leadership roles.  Our district is focused on building our future leaders and these three coaches are examples of this goal as we hired from within our Laredo ISD coaching family,” said LISD Athletic Director Sylvia Barrera. â€śThey will continue to strengthen the focus on student athlete character/leadership development and successful athletic program outcomes.”

Coach Alejandro Garza has extensive experience in baseball having been an assistant coach for the past 10 years. He started his career at Cigarroa High School and was the assistant baseball coach at Martin until 2023. Garza, a native of Laredo and graduate of John B. Alexander High School, was a four-year baseball letterman. He went on to play baseball at Tyler Junior College and transferred to Texas A&M University and graduated in 2005 with a Bachelor of Science degree.  

 

“I’m extremely grateful and blessed for this opportunity,” said Alejandro Garza. “Martin High School has so much history and tradition that it’s truly an honor to be the head baseball coach for the mighty Tigers.

Coach Jorge Romo has 20 years of experience in football and track & field. For the past 11 years, he has proudly served as a coach at Martin High School. Romo, is a product of LISD schools graduating from Cigarroa High School.  He earned a Bachelor of Science in Fitness and Sports and History from TAMIU, and a Master of Science from American Public University in Sports Management.  

 

“In my first year as head track coach, I am excited and honored to embark on this journey with a passionate group of athletes. With a deep love for the sport and a dedication to their development, I aim to inspire and guide my team to reach new heights,” said Jorge Romo. “Together, we will cultivate a culture of hard work, resilience, and teamwork, pushing boundaries and embracing challenges. I look forward to continuing to shape the lives of exceptional young athletes, striving for excellence, and leaving a legacy.”

Coach Rivera has been a member of the Cigarroa High School staff for the past seven years as a Biology, Chemistry and Physics teacher. He is a proud graduate of the Class of 2010 of Dr. Leo G. Cigarroa High School. Coach Rivera continued his higher education at Texas A&M International University. As part of an immigrant family, he is a first-generation high school and university graduate. He earned a bachelor’s degree in arts and science and obtained a teaching certification at TAMIU as well. In addition to coaching, he is a high school and college referee, and soccer has always been a part of his life. He was the girls’ head soccer coach for the past 6 years, prior to his being named the next head coach for the boys’ program. 

 

“I’m honored to take over the position of boys’ head soccer coach and ready to work to bring success to the program,” said Rivera.
